The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The one-time leader was sentenced of plotting a military coup in September and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under confinement pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his tracking device and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".
